Deal with your allergies better by dealing better with your indoor and outdoor Environment.
To lead a life happily it was said by a wise man not to expect changes in others, but to try to change ourselves. In the same way to live happily with allergies it is better to learn to make changes in self than try to change the environment completely.
Common outdoor allergies are weed pollen, tree pollen, grass pollen, mold, fungus, animal dander, dust mites and cockroaches etc.
Seasonal allergies and all year round allergies can be controlled by oral or nasal medication prescribed by your doctor too. Clogged nostril, sinus, itchy eyes and itchy throat are the most common symtoms of seasonal allergy. Severe allergies may lead to Asthma too.
The non-prescription based tips below should hopefully help one feel less tierd during the day and be able to get some undisturbed sleep at night.
Doctor might recommend allergy test and / or prescribe allergy shots. I had taken allergy shots which have helped minimize the severity of allergy attacks.
11 Non-prescription tips to deal with Environmental allergies include the following:
1.
Air Conditioning: Limit your exposure to allergens. Turn on the air conditioner to keep indoor air free of outdoor allergens. Turn on the air conditioner when inside the house or inside your car. If you or your kid wants to go or play out for long time during spring or summer then do so for some time only but not for extended hours. When your kid doesn't want to come in then "bribe" him / her with a trip to the library or the mall where the air conditioner is on. Enter the room after 10 to 15 minutes after turning on the air conditioner since there could be a little bit of mold in the air conditioner due to stagnant water.
2.
Air-filter: Keep your air-filter in the standalone
air purifier and /or
furnace filter clean.
3.
Humidifiers / De-humidifiers: Low humidity helps virus and high humidity breeds mold. Invest in
humidifiers /
de-humidifier with
hygrometer (device to measure humidity). During winter months try to keep the humidity in the house around 45%. During summer month De-humidify the house to reduce growth of mold.
4.
Shower: We have found that taking showers couple hours before bed time and keep your hair dry helps in reducing the occurrence of allergy attacks. It could be that the body and hair is washed off the allergens and the bed remains clean of allergens for extended period of time. Lead labels on the
hair care and
skin care products to avoid allergens.
5.
Fluids: Encourage yourself and your kid to drink lot of clear fluids through out the day to help get rid of toxins. Also try to drink herbal tea with mint or spearmint.
6.
Saline Water: Saline water,
Neti Pot etc. are easy ways to keep the nasal passage and sinus clean of bacteria. This remedy will help clear your clogged nostril and sinus and help in getting undisturbed sleep at night. Using warm saline water to clean your eyes may help relieve itchiness in the eyes. Gargling with warm saline water may also help with itchy throat.
7.
Cold compress: Cold compress may help sooth itchy eyes. Rose water can also be used to sooth the itchiness in the eyes.
8.
Multi-Vitamins: Taking
multi-vitamins is the building block to have a strong immune system. Make it part of your daily routine since this is one of the steps that gets forgotten or skipped since it is difficult to measure the immediate results from vitamins.
9.
Breathing Exercise: Doing breathing exercises everyday, even for little kids, can be very helpful. Breathe in and breathe out takes less than 10 minutes but helps our bodies to get back to equilibrium.
10.
