Default Nebulizer - Usage

Description
Nebulizer helps in dispensation of liquid medicine in form of mist so that it can be applied directly to the lungs or respiratory passage unlike giving oral medication.

The effectiveness of the medication through a nebulizer is much faster than oral medication since the mist is applied directly to the affected respiratory organs.

Nebulizer is used by people with asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD,) and other respiratory conditions like wheezing.

Nebulizers require doctor's prescription and are not available over the counter.

Age
Nebulizer are generally used by kids from 1 year all the way to 12 years depending on their comfort level with the next step up i.e. Inhalers. Kids graduate from using Nebulizers to using Inhalers once they able to effectively use the inhalers.

Mist dispenser types
The two most common types are 1. mask 2. mouthpiece. Generally the mask is used for kids youger kids and mouthpiece is used for older kids. However, use the one your kid is comfortable with.

Power options
There are three types 1. power outlet 2. battery operated 3. cigarette lighter. Use the one that meets your lifestyle and requirement. The ones with power outlet are the most common and the least expensive.

Usage, Care and Maintenance
1. Alway start with a clean kit - mouthpiece, medicine cup, reservoir, tubing etc.
2. Take slow and deep breaths. If possible, hold each breath for 2-3 seconds before breathing out to allow the medication to settle into the respiratory organs
3. If the person feels dizzy or jittery then try to breathe slowly or take couple minute rest before continuing the treatment. Inform your doctor if this continues.
4. Once the nebulizing process is complete then clean and throw away the unused medication as this can lead to bacterial growth
5. During the day clean the kit with running water and use it after the kit is dry again
6. At the end of the day i.e. last use of the kit one should put the kit in 1 part vinegar and 3 part water for 30 minutes and then air dry. The tubing does not need to be washed.
7. Dispose off the disposable kits after 2-3 weeks of using it
8. Always have a spare clean kit in case one breaks
