Default Nasal Spray - Effective usage for environmental allergies

Description
Nasal sprays help reduce environmental allergy symptoms like sinus inflammation, nasal congestion or ear congestion due to nasal / sinus congestion, throat itch due to common environmental allergens like weed pollen, tree pollen, grass pollen, mold, fungus, animal dander, dust mites and cockroaches etc.

Prescription
Prescription based nasal sprays are generally based on corticosteroids or antihistamine

Examples of corticosteroid based nasal spray are Nasonex, Flonase / Flixonase. This is one of the most commonly prescribed nasal spray.

Example of antihistamine based nasal spray is Astelin. This is the only nasal spray with antihistamine.

Non-prescription
Topical decongestants - There are some over the counter nasal spray like Afrin, Sinex etc. which should be used only for THREE days in a row only. Prolonged use can in fact worsen the condition.

Nasal Mast Cell Stabilizers – Cromolyn sodium nasal spray (Nasalcrom) is the only available nasal mast cell stabilizer. Frequent dosing (3 to 6 times per day) of Nasalcrom is required. This frequent dosage may be a disadvantage to using Nasalcrom.

Saline water based: The best example is saline water based nasal spray which cleanses the nose and make the person sneeze and get rid of any allergens present in the nose. This can be found as Neti-Pot in stores. This has no stinging or burning effect and no side effect. Saline water based nasal sprays can be used frequently during winter months to keep the nasal passage moist.

Using the nasal spray helps in reducing sinus seepage into the ear which causes the feeling of an echo in the ear. If one has an echoey feeling in the head or ear it would be best to visit the doctor to get a prescription nasal spray like Flonase or Nasonex and also get a decongestant to remove the stuffiness. This should give you quick relief.

From an ongoing maintenance standpoint you can use a non-prescription way to clear the nasal passage / sinus. Look for Neti Pot. This is a small utensil that you use with saline water to clear sinus. This will also help keep the sinus clean and reduce infection. Try to keep the discipline of doing the nasal cleaning on a regular basis esp. before an allergy season and you can avoid this Echoey feeling in the future.

To avoid sinus infection it is important to take action on the first sign and not try to avoid taking action or if required medication. "A stitch is time will save nine".
